One day over the spring, I conceived this crazy idea to create overnight Backpacking Workshops for women in the Cincinnati region. People had reached out to me regarding local trips, friends asked me to show them the trails in Red River Gorge, and Explorer Chick’s mission is to impact, get outdoors, and remind women how it feels to play. It was the perfect storm of ideas that led to the backpacking workshops. I just needed an expert to write the Explorer Chick Backpacking Field Guide and teach the workshops. I immediately knew the woman for the job: Lynsey Harmon.
Lynsey and I met while working together and next to each other at Morgan Stanley in Cincinnati in 2014. We spent a majority of our time daydreaming about mountains, talking about the Appalachian Trail, and running to Whole Foods for guacamole and lime flavored tortilla chips. (We actually did spend some time working, but that’s less memorable 😉).
Lynsey is an AT section hiker checking off parts of the Appalachian Trail a few weeks at a time each year. I had been fascinated by this idea of backpacking in the wilderness and living on the land. Sitting side by side, I would ask a thousand questions to learn more. With zero exposure to backcountry camping, I had no idea how it worked!
And so when the idea of teaching women who want to backpack and aren’t sure where to start came to mind, I immediately sent an email to Lynsey asking to meet for dinner. Let’s just say, she fell in love with the idea! To share her passion and knowledge of the trails and empowering women to get outside was right up her alley. Perfect. The Explorer Chick team was expanding with the addition of an experienced, strong woman who would be both a powerful leader and educator to Explorer Chicks. And, we could once again be chatting about hiking, mountains, and backpacking, but with a higher purpose!
Let’s meet Lynsey! In her own words:
John Muir once said “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” I can honestly say that I have always found this to be true, but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I found that “far more” to be something enjoyable!
My name is Lynsey, and I’m a weekend warrior extraordinaire! Whether with my horses, my husband, my dogs, or dozens of soon-to-be friends, I enjoy experiencing everything outdoors… Especially “walks with nature”! For the last four years or so, I’ve spent many nights in the woods with no electronics in sight, and packed on hundreds of miles on trails and in backcountry. Over those days and miles my “far more” has included everything from self confidence, to blisters, and even a proposal! Yes, I love the outdoors and the mountains so much that my husband proposed to me on a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail!
On and off the trail I’m the very definition of a gear head and absolutely LOVE exchanging backpacking stories and knowledge with other people. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to be doing some of the things I love most with all the amazing ladies of Explorer Chick!
We went on Facebook Live to make the announcement and learn even more about Lynsey. We talked first experiences, trail names, and general shenanigans!
Wanna meet Lynsey in person and have her drop some knowledge on you? Join Explorer Chick on one of our overnight Backpacking Trips where you will learn the skills and gain the experience to backpack confidently in the wild.
