Overview

Explore and hike the backcountry of Alaska in Lake Clark National Park on our 8 Day, Women-Only, Small Group Hiking Adventure Tour in Alaska.

Immerse yourself in the last frontier and experience Alaska the way Mother Nature intended. It will take a Bush plane and a Float plane ride to access the wilds of Alaska where you’ll completely unplug from society to explore the wilderness without the constant distraction of the outside world.

Once landing on Turquoise Lake in the heart of Lake Clark National Park, you’ll quickly feel at home in your cozy tent along the shoreline. Bask in the sunset rays painted across the sky while your local guides cook up delicious, backcountry meals. Our meals are sourced from local ingredients when possible to bring you the true, savory experience of the backcountry. Each morning, you’ll wake up to the smells of coffee and a hot breakfast being prepared with the tingling anticipation of adventure ahead. We won’t be lounging around at the Explorer Chick Basecamp all day, heck no! Each day, we’ll explore a new area from our Backcountry Front Yard.

We’ll head off in a new direction to explore Lake Clark National Park every day. There are zero marked trails in Lake Clark National Park, save one (we’ll hike that on the last day). Day hikes will be on unmarked terrain that haven’t seen the influence of humans. We’ll rely on the expertise of our local guides, maps, and compasses for navigation. We’ll hike through the stunning 5000′ tall Grand Canyon of Lake Clark National Park. We’ll hike across the Alaskan tundra to witness a natural sheep lick near a Dall Sheep habitat. Keep your eyes peeled for Alaskan natives like caribou, grizzly bear, wolves, and wolverines. We’ll hike up a long river drainage to stand in front of the massive Turquoise Glacier. We’ll sip coffee on the shores of Turquoise Lake taking in the silence and solitude.

After 3 days at our expedition style basecamp, we’ll pack then load up our inflatable sea kayaks with our backcountry gear. We’ll push off from shore and begin the 5 mile paddle across Turquoise Lake to the far end. Our paddles will be slicing through the glacier-fed lake as we slowly make our way to our new basecamp. We’ll be kayaking on flat water which is suitable for beginners. Upon arrival at our new basecamp, we’ll witness an unforgettable sunset as dinner is sizzling nearby. We’ll explore the landscape from our new campsite for the next 2 days by embarking on day hikes in new directions each day.

All too soon, the arrival of our float plane landing on Turquoise Lake will mark our slow return to civilization. The float plane drops us off at a cluster of quaint cabins along the shore of 35 mile long Lake Clark for our final evening. We’ll relish in a hot shower and feast at a local restaurant. On the last day of our adventure, we’ll board a charter flight that will take us back to Anchorage.

This adventure is for Explorer Chicks who want to truly experience Alaska. Cruise boats and driving tours offer glimpses into the last frontier, but this adventure will drop you off (literally) in the backcountry to explore the wilderness with a group of bold, fearless, like-minded women.

Day 2: Into the Wild

We’ll get an early start to go over final logistics, gear check, and last minute questions. After we make sure you have everything you’ll need for 1 week off the grid in Alaska, we’ll head over to our bush plane at Merrill Field.

We’ll embark on the first leg of our journey and board our bush plane taking us from Anchorage to Port Alsworth. Have your camera ready, this 1 hour, 40 minute flight is one of the most stunning bush flights in Alaska! After landing in Port Alsworth, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch along the shores of Lake Clark. It’ll start to set in how far into the backcountry we’re really going as we get ready to board our second flight in the wilds of Alaska.

After lunch, we’ll load into float planes and lift off into the afternoon skies bound for Turquoise Lake – a 40 minute flight north of Port Alsworth. After landing on Turquoise Lake, we’ll spend a couple of hours setting up camp at the east end of the lake. We’ll assemble our kayaks while absorbing the solitude of this silent wilderness. After our first gourmet wilderness dinner and home-baked dessert, we’ll have the chance to do an evening paddle on the lake or simply relax on the shore while taking in the stunning view.

Day 3: Hike to Turquoise Glacier

We’ll wake up in our cozy sleeping bags to the smell of coffee and the sounds of a sumptuous breakfast being made. Fuel up for the day along the shores of Turquoise Lake before loading up our day packs to explore our new surroundings!

We’ll strike out for the day and hike into the “grand canyon” of Lake Clark National Park. We’ll be following one of the water sources flowing into Turquoise Lake coming from the beautiful Turquoise Glacier. As you marvel at the 5000’ walls of the canyon and the waterfalls cascading from distant summits, you’ll be left speechless by the surrounding majesty and the vertical relief enveloping you. Our path dead-ends at the edge of Turquoise Glacier where you’ll witness the evidence of how the Alaskan landscape is continuing to take shape. If weather and river levels allow, we’ll head up to the glacier ice for a truly unique Alaskan hiking experience.

We head off into the unmarked terrain following a route known only by our local guides. Our route will have us navigating a couple river crossings while witnessing multiple glaciers that are feeding into Turquoise Lake. We’ll learn about the forces of nature that have shaped the iconic landscape while exploring the endless terrain from the comfort of our Basecamp.

Dinner is always better with a view! We’ll feast on a hot, gourmet backpacking meal as we watch the sun set over the lake. And yes, we’ll always have dessert!

Day 5: Kayak Across Turquoise Lake

After a leisurely shore-side breakfast, we’ll break down camp, swap our trekking poles for paddles, and launch our inflatable sea kayaks into the pristine waters of Turquoise Lake. Kayaking on Turquoise Lake is both awe inspiring, humbling, and fit for beginners. As we paddle our way west to our next camp, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for a glimpse of one of the many critters that call Lake Clark National Park home. As our paddles slice through the turquoise waters, we’ll crane our necks taking in the panoramic views of the mountains surrounding the lake.

After paddling 5 miles to the opposite end of the lake, we’ll set up camp on a prominent spit of land on the southwest end of the lake. A spit is a stretch of land jutting into the water. Our campsite on the spit provides easy access to the tundra country that is characteristic of the western slope of the Alaska Range. We’ll pull our kayaks ashore, set up camp, and savor another delicious dinner from our with front row seats to a gorgeous sunset.

Day 6: Hike to a natural Sheep Lick

Today, we’ll hike to and experience one of the most unique locations in Lake Clark National Park. Nestled deep in the mountains a few miles south of our camp is the magical ‘sheep lick.’ This mineral lick is a favorite hang out spot for the majestic Dall sheep and we’ll likely see ewes and lambs frolicking on its incredibly steep slopes. Dall Sheep inhabit some of Alaska’s most rugged alpine environments and are only found in Alaska and and Western Canada.

Along our hike, we’ll be passing through a lively wildlife habitat. We’ll be on the lookout for caribou, wolves, grizzly bears, and wolverines. Although we are alone in the wilderness, the wildlife prefers to keep to itself. We’ll go over wildlife safety and how to properly react around Alaskan wildlife while enjoying the unique experience.

We’ll scramble up and over terraces on the southern shore of the lake while steadily making our way to Crag Peak. From the summit of this rocky peak, we’ll be rewarded with awesome panoramic views from our newly achieved high point of our expedition.

Perhaps a bit soon, the mid-afternoon arrival of the float plane will mark our slow return to the world outside. We’ll pack up our camp and fly away from our home along Turquoise Lake. Our pilot will return us to Port Alsworth, where we’ll check into the quaint cabins just steps from the beach.

After hot showers and a celebratory dinner, we’ll tally up our wildlife sightings, and try to digest the humbling euphoria of days spent in total solitude.

We require a minimum of 4 Explorer Chicks for this trip. Please confirm your trip is guaranteed before booking airfare.

You will receive a travel guide attached to your booking confirmation with all the information you’ll need to prepare for your epic trip.

Your adventure begins and ends in Anchorage, Alaska.

Day 1: Arrival Day. You can arrive in Anchorage anytime before 6pm. We’ll have an official orientation and Welcome Dinner beginning at 7pm! Airport transportation to our hotel is provided.

Day 8: Departure Day. You can depart Anchorage anytime after 9pm today. You are responsible for your own airport transfer and/or hotel stay.

Just as you would a marathon, you must train prior to your adventure. The itinerary is full of big hikes on rough terrain. You should be comfortable with hiking up to 12 miles in a day with your day pack gaining 2500′ of elevation on unmarked, rocky terrain. We will not be hiking on manicured groomed trails. You should very easily be able to hike on rough terrain at 2 miles per hour. Please read the itinerary thoroughly with the stated elevation gains and distances.

You should be training on rough and rugged terrain – not perfectly paved sidewalks. Train how you play! Also, find steps, a hill, or the Stairmaster and get to climbing! Your quads, booty, and calves will thank you. Train in all the weather – This even means rain! Please consider the physical demands carefully as it is for the safety and enjoyment of the group.

Train your tootsies! Do not show up with brand new hiking boots or trail shoes. You should be spending hours upon hours in your boots leading up to your adventure to break them in. Better to suffer blisters at home than to miss out on a hike due to painful hot spots on your feet. This is our number one injury. Do not let it happen to you!

All Explorer Chicks will be required to sign an Acknowledgement of Physical Demands as part of their waiver upon booking.

To protect your travel investment and your hide, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. World Nomads is our trusted travel insurance provider. Receive an no-hassle, online quote in less than 2 minutes.
