Chattanooga Map & Compass Course

Chattanooga, TN
Navigation, Hiking
12 Explorer Chicks
1/2 Day

Overview

You’re prepared to hit the trails and put in some miles. You’ve got your boots laced up, your trail map downloaded to your phone and your daypack loaded with the Ten Essentials. But what if the phone battery dies or the map didn’t download like you’d hoped before you lost service? No worries, Explorer Chick! After you take this map and compass course, you’ll feel more confident out there in the face of unexpected surprises like these!

Learn to Use a Map and Compass

The outdoors will be our classroom. The instructor will be a beacon of knowledge shining light on the tons of information your map has to offer, the proper use of your compass, and how to put the two together. You’ll learn about magnetic north, true north, and magnetic variation (declination) as well as how to set it on a Suunto M3 Compass. After covering these fundamentals, you’ll get to practice plotting a route on your map. Feeling more confident? Heck yeah, you are! Now, hop up and follow that plotted route! Practice makes perfect so you’ll get to try a few times.

By the day’s end, you’ll be using navigation terms like leapfrogging, triangulation and boxing off. You’ll also learn how to take and shoot compass bearings. More importantly, you’ll feel better prepared to hit those trails and put that hiker booty to work!
