After entering Los Glaciares National Park, you’ll enjoy a scenic route along Lake Argentino. While most glaciers are receding, Perito Moreno is unusually advancing. The result is glacial calving. In laymen’s terms: Large chunks crack and break off right before your eyes! We’ll have a local guide providing us with a private tour along the 3 miles of boardwalks sharing the history and geology of the enormous ice wall.  Then you’ll board a boat to navigate closer to the massive ice wall. In the evening, we’ll return to our accommodations in El Calafate.

Fitz Roy, on a clear day you can enjoy stunning views of the imposing mountain range as you approach town. Once you have settled into your accommodation, you will be picked up by your rafting guide and head out for an adrenaline fueled adventure down the Rio de las Vueltas.

The excursion starts at the rafting basecamp where you will learn how to use a dry suit as well as the basics of paddling as part of a team! Once you are equipped for your adventure we will start our descent down the Las Vueltas River, a distance of about 16 kilometers. The first section is gentle, which will allow for some time to get used to your paddles. Later we will enter the rapid zone, feeling the adrenaline of the adventure and admiring the unique sedimentary formations of the canyon. Today’s excursion if for the truly adventurous! After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the Los Huemules Reserve just outside of El Chalten. From here you will start by hiking through a dense Lenga forest on a well-maintained trail until you reach the Laguna Diablo. Once you reach the lake, it’s time to gear up for the next part of the trip, a hike that skirts the northern margin of the lake on very irregular terrain until you reach the Via Ferrata. What the heck is a Via Ferrata? It’s a rock climbing route of very little difficulty that has been set with a mix of steel wires and artificial steps, so you can climb autonomously with self-secured and specially designed harness belts. Your guide will provide you with all necessary equipment and brief you on it so you can safely traverse the Via Ferrata.

After completing the 1km harnessed course, you will be rewarded with stunning up close views of the Cagliero Glacier. From here your guide will fix each participant with crampons and do a brief lesson of ice hiking. You will then explore the glacier on foot for the next 1-2 hours depending on the groups physical level and climactic conditions. After this unrivaled experience, you will return the same way you came – on the via ferrata and then through the forest until you meet your transfer back to El Chalten.

Following a brief stop, you’ll continue gently climbing until you reach the starting point for the trail to Laguna de Los Tres. This is going to be the most challenging part of the day! You will hike for 1 hour up a very steep hill, however, the effort is worth it with the breathtaking views of Mt. Fitz Roy at the top. As long as the weather is agreeable, you will have lunch at the lagoon at the top of the climb. Afterwards, you will begin a descent along the same trail heading towards your home for the night, which is a forested campsite called Camping Poincenot.

The trail is relatively flat, which will be a welcome break after yesterday’s climb. After a couple of hours, you will drop into the glacial valley en route to Laguna Torre. Laguna Torre is a valley famed by geologists and photographers for its perfect “U” shape. At the end of the valley, you will approach Laguna Torre, its glacier, and the famous Monte Torre. *Explorer Chick reserves the option to modify trip itineraries at the discretion of your tour director as necessary due to weather, conditions, illness, injury, group dynamics, availability, or other unforeseen incidents.

We require a minimum of 4 Explorer Chicks for this trip. Please confirm your trip is guaranteed before booking your airfare.

You will receive a travel guide with all the information you’ll need to prepare for your epic trip.

Your trip begins and ends in El Calafate (FTE).

Day 1: Arrival Day. You can arrive in El Calafate at any time today before 7pm. Official group rendezvous will occur this evening in the lobby for our Welcome Dinner.

Day 9: Departure Day. You can depart El Calafate at any time after 12pm.

Just as you would a marathon, you must train prior to your adventure. The itinerary is packed with 9  days of hiking and adventure with a variety of distances and terrain. You should be comfortable with hiking up to 12 miles in a day with your day pack. You should very easily be able to hike on rough terrain at 2 miles per hour. Please read the itinerary thoroughly with the stated elevation gains and distances.

You should be training on rough and rugged terrain – not perfectly paved sidewalks. Train how you play! Also, find steps, a hill, or the Stairmaster and get to climbing! Your quads, booty, and calves will thank you. Train in all the weather – This even means rain! Please consider the physical demands carefully as it is for the safety and enjoyment of the group.

Train your tootsies! Do not show up with brand new hiking boots or trail shoes. You should be spending hours upon hours in your boots leading up to your adventure to break them in. Better to suffer blisters at home than to miss out on a hike due to painful hot spots on your feet. This is our number one injury. Do not let it happen to you!

All Explorer Chicks will be required to sign an Acknowledgement of Physical Demands as part of their waiver upon booking.
