Activity Level 5 – HIGHLY STRENUOUS This is an incredible adventure whose intensity should not be discounted due to the popularity of the destination. This trip is rated as Highly Strenuous because it is packed full of hiking in alpine conditions with elevations ranging from 11,000 feet in Cusco up to 13,828′ at the highest point on the Inca Trail. Hiking in high alpine environments is drastically slower and harder due to the effects of altitude on the body. Explorer Chick has built in a 3 day period of acclimatization to reduce possible effects on the trail. Altitude: At all times your trip will be above 8,000 feet, the elevation where anyone is at risk of altitude sickness. All people are susceptible to altitude sickness regardless of your age, gender and fitness. Symptoms include headache, lightheadedness, weakness, trouble sleeping and an upset stomach. The Guide Team reserves the right to evacuate anyone from the trip at the guest’s expense for displaying worsening altitude sickness symptoms or for any reason that affects their or the group’s safety. Before your Trip: Some pre-existing medical conditions are known to severely worsen at high altitude and be difficult to adequately treat on the ground, leading to more serious consequences. It is imperative that you discuss your pre-existing medical condition/s with your doctor. We understand certain medications are reported to aid acclimatizing to high altitude. There are also prescription drugs that aid with altitude sickness. Please discuss these options with your doctor. Daily Hiking: Day 5: 6 Hours. 7.3 miles. 5,003’/1,132′ gain/loss. 12,598′ Altitude. Many of these women hit a new personal high on day 1 by just stepping off the plane in Cusco, a two mile high city perched at 11,100 feet. We spent the first three days taking easy walking tours, letting our bodies ease into the high elevation and getting to know our fellow Chicks. 👭 Unlike most trips where the majority sign up solo we had three groups of longtime friends: two sets of 30-year friendships and a team of four from Idaho, dubbed the Boise Four! Our mix of old and new friends visited ruins, cathedrals, temples and artist collectives and met all four South American camelids: llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicunas! 🥾 By day four, we were ready to hike! We hit the Inca Trail, literally following in the footsteps of the Inca, following artfully paved paths over three high mountain passes and past more than a dozen ruins on our way to the mother of all mountaintop fortresses: Machu Picchu! ✨Along the way, we ate the best backcountry meals we`ve ever had and slept under a never-before-seen view of the Milky Way. By the time we conquered another new high point at 13,828 foot Dead Woman`s Pass and laid eyes on Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate at Sunset, we were certain we could do anything, no matter how high, hard or far. 👋 By the final goodbyes, decades-long friendships were deepened, and new connections were flourishing.
