The Appalachian Trail runs the length of Shenandoah National Park, about 101 miles of it, so actual thru-hikers — the ones smelling like campfire smoke and questionable decisions — share overlooks and the trail with you. Try not to make it weird. 

The park’s waterfalls outnumber its overlooks, which is saying something, since the overlooks are the entire reason Skyline Drive exists. Expect stream crossings, rock scrambles, and an occasional black bear sighting from a distance you did not choose voluntarily.

Virginia also grows genuinely good wine, a fact that surprises people who assumed the state’s biggest export was Founding Fathers trivia. A day on the trail earns you an evening at a vineyard where the only real decision left is red or white, and nobody’s grading your palate.

Sunset over the Blue Ridge looks staged, in the way real things sometimes do. Pack a jacket regardless of what the valley temperature promised at breakfast.
