Utah has five national parks inside its borders and a mild chip on its shoulder about the tourists who only ever make it to Zion. Fair. The red rock elsewhere here doesn’t stop being spectacular just because it isn’t the one with the shuttle system and the crowds.
Slot canyons narrow enough to require a sideways shuffle. Arches balanced on stone legs that look structurally unwise. Salt flats so flat and white they mess with your depth perception, in a good way. None of it asks for much beyond sturdy shoes and a willingness to get sandy in some fairly personal places.
These national parks hold official dark-sky certifications, which sounds like a bureaucratic footnote until you’re standing under an actual Milky Way for the first time in years. Red dust, meanwhile, gets into everything — boot laces, tent seams, the inside of a camera bag — and comes home with you whether you packed it or not.
The Zion and Bryce Hiking and Glamping trip covers the hoodoos and canyon country. The Moab and Arches National Parks Hiking Weekend covers the balancing rock formations and red rock closer to town.
